Eye-Catching Ceilings

Use your ceiling to create dramatic effect.

Creating a Dramatic Effect

Even though the ceiling is often called a room's fifth wall, many homeowners leave this canvas untouched as they focus on "real"wall treatments. But a creatively designed ceiling can make bland rooms beautiful. Here are a few ways to make this fifth wall work for you.

Vary ceiling heights to define spaces.
In a large room, for example, lower the ceiling in one section to delineate a cozy sitting area or dining alcove.

Apply crown moldings where wall and ceiling meet for instant character.
Moldings work well in rooms of any size, but if ceilings are 8 feet or higher, don't be afraid to combine various moldings to create elaborate designs.

Layer drywall on certain sections of the ceiling to create a unique pattern or design.
Or use this technique to emphasize a center chandelier or light fixture in a formal dining room. You'll be able to create a unique ceiling medallion without using expensive materials.

Build a coffered ceiling or tray ceiling if your ceiling is at least 9 feet high.
Both are good options for remodelers, because they can be created within many existing structures. A coffered style features recessed panels; a tray ceiling angles up toward the center of the room at a 45- to 60-degree angle. Cove lighting installed into moldings around a tray ceiling can further enhance the space by casting interesting patterns of light and shadow on the walls and ceiling.
