Things to Consider Before Adding a Porch
A new or renovated front porch is a valuable addition to a home, providing space for outdoor relaxation and giving a house an inviting appeal. But before embarking on a porch project, homeowners should evaluate several issues.
Coverage:
The addition or extension of a porch means covering portions of your house or consuming parts of your property. Consider the loss of lawn or garden space and investigate local setback rules. These circumstances may determine the dimensions of your porch and the extent to which it may wrap around your house.
Landscaping:
A new porch may require revitalized landscaping, particularly if heavy materials such as stone or brick are part of an ambitious project. Even the simplest porch may seem incomplete without a flowerbed in front of it.
Appearance:
One of the most difficult aspects of adding or remodeling a porch is making sure the finished project blends with the original structure and doesn't throw off its balance. Materials and style should match or coordinate with your existing home, and you may need to move doors or add details such as gables in order to prevent the porch from looking awkward or disjointed.
Exposure:
Porches may seem like rooms, but they're still outside. Consider Mother Nature when selecting materials, furniture, paint, and fixtures for your new or remodeled space. Many new durable, weather-resistant fabrics and furniture are available for outdoor use, so don't feel you have to compromise your comfort or sense of style. Just check that any fabrics are mildew-resistant and washable.
