Adding a Porch

The addition of a front porch to an 1896 home creates an inviting space for homeowners, neighbors, even a porch swing.

Renovation Creates the Perfect Space For a Swing

Before:
Without a porch to set off the front of the house, the facade lacked interest.

After:
The addition of a 30x9-foot porch creates a welcoming entrance and reflects the home's roots.

A front porch is a welcome addition to any home, but it was especially appropriate for this Colorado Springs house. Located in the city's North End Historic District, the 1896 home harks back to a time when front porches were a dominant feature and gathering place.

For this old house, the porch didn't need to be fancy—just functional and inviting. In this relatively simple renovation, painted wooden columns and simple balusters complement the home's existing exterior. The entrance is anchored with wide front steps and added a gentle curve to the roof above the pillars, masking the off-center front door.

With the addition of a few chairs and a porch swing, the new space at this old house is right at home in the neighborhood, offering the perfect place for a cup of coffee and conversation with friends and family.
