Homeowners who think they're getting a deal by purchasing cheap windows may as well throw their money out the...well, you know. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that an average homeowner can save as much as $95 per year by investing in energy-efficient windows instead of the standard double-pane, clear-glass alternatives.

So how can a homeowner tell which windows are efficient and which are not? The easiest way to identify energy-efficient windows, says Brian Hedlund, product marketing manager for JELD-WEN Windows, is to look for the Energy Star label. Windows that receive an Energy Star rating for your region of the country are guaranteed to provide optimum energy efficiency throughout the year.
