Create a Home Office

Almost any area can be transformed into a suitable home office.

Location, Location, Location

Whether it's called an office or a study, a space for working at home is almost a requirement today. But beyond a computer desk and bookshelves, there's little that is standard from home to home.

Many people transform an extra bedroom into a work space, or create an office that doubles as a guest room. In fact, many offices have become flex-space that combines several functions, such as a den, library, guest suite, and even a music room. Many homeowners place their work space off the master bedroom. However, if clients will be visiting the home office, the study is best situated near the home's entry.

Whatever form it takes, the office centers on storage and selecting the right home office furniture. Built-in bookshelves are a natural fit; cabinetry made for hanging files and other office essentials is also a popular and convenient choice.

In short, there are no rules other than to personalize the space for your own needs. Do you want everything within easy reach, or do you want to hide all the clutter away? If you design for the way you like to work, you'll be happier later.
