Be Prepared with Questions
Questions to Ask a Contractor
When you meet with a contractor for the first time, it's best to be prepared. Here are six questions to consider when talking to a contractor.
1. Are you licensed and insured?
This is a key question in areas where remodeling contractors are required to be licensed. Also ask for the contractor's license number, then verify that the license is current and valid. Do the same with insurance—make sure it's current. You want to hire a contractor who follows the laws.
2. May I have three references?
Talking with homeowners who have used a particular contractor—and visiting their projects, if possible—can be very enlightening. Avoid yes-or-no questions, such as, "Did you like him?" Instead ask open-ended questions, such as, "How was your experience working with this contractor?" or "What would you do differently next time?"
