Budget Busters 6-10

6. Not getting enough bids.
Get at least three bids - no matter how good the first one seems.

7. Failing to mention every problem.
A continually clogged toilet or leaky window may seem unrelated to the project you're planning, but it might represent hidden problems that must be addressed before other work begins. Tell bidding contractors about all the issues.

8. Overlooking special requirements of products.
Some appliances and hearths require special hookups. To prevent costly modifications late in the process, pick these large items before electrical, plumbing, and drywall work begins.

9. Poorly written contracts.
Contracts should include details such as how many square feet of tile will be installed and the amount of lumber required to frame a room. Contractors should also provide a list detailing decisions you still must make and deadlines for making them.

10. Making changes midproject.
After plumbing, electricals, and drywall are in place, changing your mind about things like a light switch position requires tearing out finished work and redoing it. Have a plan to ensure you pay for labor and materials only once.
