Basement Windows and Doors

Tips on how to enhance windows and doors to your basement.

Basement Windows and Doors

Even if it's dim in your basement right now, your future could be bright, cheerful, and more accessible by adding windows and doors or enlarging existing windows. As you evaluate your basement for window and door needs, find out what you need to do to meet local codes

If your foundation is entirely below grade, you can dig a window well to accommodate a larger window—an option that pulls in nearly as much light as one located above grade. Your window well can be 12 inches deep or more and as wide as you want. Retain the soil surrounding the well with a ready-made steel insert or use more attractive materials, such as limestone blocks or the painted concrete blocks used in the well. Scenic vistas, printed on weather-resistant polystyrene are available to create a "view."

Greenhouse-type windows atop a basement bump-out are another option and are especially good for scooping in natural light.

If you're fortunate enough to own a house with a walk-out basement, you already may enjoy the benefits of good access and light pouring into the space through a patio door. For foundations situated partially or entirely below grade, you can explore the feasibility of excavating soil to create a walk-out. Consult an engineer, an architect, or a qualified builder to find out if your space allows this option.
