Impact-Resistant Windows

A guide to buying windows.

Storm Windows

This is the first line in your home's defense against a storm.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the massive destruction it caused, it's clear that homes in hurricane-prone areas need greater protection. Among the available building products is a relatively new class of impact-resistant laminated windows. Required in some coastal areas and recommended in all, these windows could well be the difference between safety and ruin. Hurricane-resistant windows are designed to withstand significant impact from flying debris.

They're tested by shooting a 2x4 piece of lumber out of a cannon directly into the glass. The windows might spider when hit hard enough, but they won't shatter. And that could well save a home, because once a window shatters and the wind enters, the internal pressure can literally blow off a roof.

Impact-resistant windows cost approximately 15 - 20 percent or more than standard windows, but they bring peace of mind—and they're a lot cheaper than rebuilding a home. Among the brands available are: Andersen Stormwatch, Hurd FeelSafe, JELD-WEN ImpactGard, Marvin StormPlus, Peachtree StaySafe, Pella HurricaneShield, and Weather Shield LifeGuard.
