Creating Wall Niches
Adding Storage and Design
Incorporating wall niches into most homes can be a simple, inexpensive way to introduce dramatic change. It's easiest to work on uninsulated interior walls, while avoiding exterior walls and those holding electrical wiring, plumbing, or ducting.
Plan creatively, then consult professionals before cutting walls so your work is safe and your project is successful.
Look for underused space and redefine areas that aren't well-used.
For example, the dead wall space at the end of a stairway might make a good place for shelves.
Cut the walls.
A cutout may allow an additional view. The finish work can add a refreshing facet to your room's personality in much the same way as mounting a new picture would. Cutouts may also allow in more light or extra display space.
Break out of your box.
Do you have acres of boring plaster wall surfaces? Push storage into walls to make them more interesting—and useful. Recess a 5-inch shelf into a 6-inch wall. Bring a wall with erratic turns and angles together by building a continuous wall of storage.
Challenge your assumptions.
Your walls don't have to appear as they always have—some can move. Be creative and bold with your designing dreams.
