Creative Storage Ideas
Unique Places & Designs
Once you've determined what needs to be stored, consider these ways to accommodate different items.
1. Brave built-in shelves.
Figure out how your shelves are going to work and commit to a design. Adjustable shelves may seem more convenient, but are you really going to change the shelves once they are installed?
2. Keep it subtle.
Choose storage units that blend with the architecture of your home. The aim is to enhance the character of a room, not overwhelm it.
3. Use open display cabinets wisely.
Before you unload every family photograph ever taken onto your new display cabinet, think again. A few key items will add interest without looking cluttered.
4. Focus on finishes.
Leaded glass, embellished wood, and molding add life to your storage spaces. Just stick with a palette and design in keeping with the rest of your home.
5. Consider hopper doors.
If the door of your cabinet is wider than it is tall, hinge it at the top to reduce wear and tear. It also is a good idea for hard-to-reach cabinets near the ceiling.
6. Use frosted glass for a modern touch.
Hidden storage does not have to be bland or boring. Frosted glass is a simple way to transform a practical storage space into a decorative feature.
