Storage Q&A: Safely Store Linens and Dishware
Storing Good Linens and Dishware
Q: I entertain infrequently. How do I safeguard my good linens and china?
A: Linens should lie flat in storage, which is easy for place mats and napkins. Larger tablecloths and runners can hang straight over coat hangers made for pants or draperies as long as you keep acid-free tissue between the fabric and cardboard. Or cover a cardboard tube with tissue or muslin; then roll the fabric around it for creaseproof storage. Line storage boxes (cardboard, paper, metal, or wood, but never plastic) with tissue or muslin for added protection. If folding large pieces, lessen the creases by placing tissue or muslin between each fold. And avoid damp basements; they invite mildew.
Keeping china in zippered protectors is a good idea. Clear plastic wrap--less expensive but not as pretty--works well, too. Separate each platter or plate with a paper plate to protect them from scratches. Use soft paper, such as coffee filters, between stacked cups. Silver flatware or serving pieces stay tarnish-free longer if stored in airtight plastic bags after being washed and dried.
