The use of shutters dates back to the days when houses did not always have glass windows. Instead, shutters covered window openings to keep heat or inclement weather out. Eventually glass panes became more common, but shutters remained a popular feature for home exteriors, even if they weren't functional, adding texture and depth to the facade.

While shutters continue to be a hardworking element of a home's exterior, they often are an afterthought.
