Wallpaper Removal

Wallpaper Removal. Information for home design and remodeling.

Q: What's the best and fastest way to remove old wallpaper?

A: Although removal can be a major chore, the task is manageable, more often than not.

To remove old wallpaper, you must break the bond of the glue holding paper in place. Glue usually lets go once soaked by a remover solution or steam. A wallpaper remover solution (get one that mixes with water) is usually easier, but not always as effective.

If you're fortunate, you have only one or two layers of fairly thin wallpaper. To get a remover solution behind the wallpaper, first score holes in the paper with an inexpensive hand tool called a Paper Tiger. Once paper is scored, soak the wall with remover, give it a few minutes to work, and then use a broad-blade putty knife to scrape the paper off.

Should the remover solution prove ineffective, try removal using a rented steamer. The principle remains the same: Break the bond of the glue, and down comes the paper. Wear protective clothing, gloves, and eye gear.
